い-adjective + すぎます (Too [adjective] / Excessively)
Supporting / Expressing Excess Quality
👀 Layer A: Visual Guide
📝 Quick Summary
This grammar pattern connects to the stem of an い-adjective (by removing the final い) to express that a quality or condition goes beyond a desirable, safe, or comfortable limit (e.g., too expensive, too spicy, too difficult).
Structure: [い-adjective (drop い)] + すぎます
Example 1: この ふくは たかすぎます (These clothes are too expensive).
Example 2: スープが あつすぎます (The soup is too hot).
🔍 Layer B: Deepening
💡 Raya’s Hack
The “II” Exception: よすぎます!
The most common trap with い-adjectives is the word いい (ii – good).
Because ii changes to yoi in conjugations, “too good” becomes よすぎます (yo-sugimasu), NOT ii-sugimasu!
– ❌ いいすぎます (Wrong)
– ⭕ よすぎます (Correct)
Example: この えいがは よすぎます! (This movie is too good!)
🚧 Joy’s Mistake
Scene: Joy is complaining about a bowl of spicy ramen.
Joy: 「この ラーメンは からい すぎます。」
(Kono raamen wa karai sugimasu.)
❌ Forgot to drop “い”!
Why?
Joy left the trailing i on karai. When combining い-adjectives with sugimasu, you MUST drop the final i to reveal the raw adjective stem (kara).
Correct: 「この ラーメンは からすぎます。」 (This ramen is too spicy.)
