N4-G-042

な-adjective + すぎます (Too [adjective] / Excessively)

Supporting / Expressing Excess Quality

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide

📝 Quick Summary

This grammar pattern connects to the base stem of a な-adjective (by dropping な) to express that a state or condition goes beyond a desirable, comfortable, or reasonable limit (e.g., too quiet, too convenient, too free/bored).

Structure: [な-adjective (drop な)] + すぎます
Example 1: この へやは しずかすぎます (This room is too quiet).
Example 2: きのうは ひますぎました (Yesterday I was too free / had way too much free time).

🔗 Connected Grammar:

  • N4-G-040: Verb ます-form + すぎます (Too much action)
  • N4-G-041: い-adjective + すぎます (Too [i-adj])
  • N5-G-010: な-adjective Basics

🔍 Layer B: Deepening

💡 Raya’s Hack

No NA and No DA!
The most common trap with な-adjectives is accidentally keeping な (na) or だ (da) when attaching sugimasu.

– ❌ しずかなすぎます (Wrong)
– ❌ しずかだすぎます (Wrong)
– ⭕ しずかすぎます (Correct)

Strip the word down to its bare base before adding sugimasu!

🚧 Joy’s Mistake

Scene: Joy is complaining that his hotel room is too noisy/lively late at night.

Joy: 「この へやは にぎやかな すぎます。」
(Kono heya wa nigiyaka-na sugimasu.)

❌ Forgot to drop “な”!

Why?

Joy left the particle-like na ending on nigiyaka(na). When attaching sugimasu to な-adjectives, you MUST remove na to reveal the raw base (nigiyaka).

Correct: 「この へやは にぎやかすぎます。」 (This room is too lively/noisy.)
