ば conditional (verb G3): する → すれば / くる → くれば
Core / Hypothetical Conditions & Logic
👀 Layer A: Visual Guide
📝 Quick Summary
The ば conditional form (仮定形 – かていけい) expresses “if X happens, then Y will result”. For Group 3 irregular verbs, する (suru) becomes すれば (sureba), and くる (kuru) becomes くれば (kureba).
Structure:
・する ➡️ すれば (Compound: [Noun] + すれば)
・くる ➡️ くれば
Example 1: まいにち べんきょうすれば、ごうかく します (If you study every day, you will pass).
Example 2: あした たなかさんが くれば、はなしましょう (If Tanaka-san comes tomorrow, let’s talk).
🔍 Layer B: Deepening
💡 Raya’s Hack
The Reading Shift for くる vs. Compound する Verbs!
Pay close attention to these two points:
1. くる ➡️ くれば (kureba): Unlike negative こない (konai) or causative こさせる (kosaseru), くる keeps its ku- sound in the ば form! It is くれば, NOT これば.
2. Compound する Verbs: Any noun + する verb simply replaces suru with すれば (sureba):
– 勉強する ➡️ 勉強すれば (benkyou-sureba: if you study)
– 練習する ➡️ 練習すれば (renshuu-sureba: if you practice)
– 質問する ➡️ 質問すれば (shitsumon-sureba: if you ask a question)
🚧 Joy’s Mistake
Scene: Joy wants to say “If Tanaka-san comes tomorrow, let’s talk.”
Joy: 「あした たなかさんが これば、はなしましょう。」
(Ashita Tanaka-san ga koreba, hanashimashou.)
❌ Used “これば” instead of “くれば”!
Why?
Joy assumed くる changes to ko- like in negative konai. However, for the ば conditional form of くる, the initial sound remains く (ku-), forming くれば (kureba).
Correct: 「あした たなかさんが くれば、はなしましょう。」 (If Tanaka-san comes tomorrow, let’s talk.)
