ば conditional (verb G2): Remove る + れば

Core / Hypothetical Conditions & Logic

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide

📝 Quick Summary

The ば conditional form (仮定形 – かていけい) expresses “if X happens, then Y will result”. For Group 2 verbs (る-verbs), drop the final る (ru) from the dictionary form and attach れば (reba).

Structure: [Group 2 Verb Dict Form (drop る)] + れば
Example 1: まいにち やさいを たべれば、げんきに なります (If you eat vegetables every day, you will become healthy).
Example 2: この えいがを みれば、かんどう します (If you watch this movie, you will be moved).

🔗 Connected Grammar:

  • N4-G-081: ば conditional (verb G1): Change final う to え + ば
  • N4-G-083: ば conditional (verb G3): する ➡️ すれば / くる ➡️ くれば
  • N4-G-001: Verb-た + ら (If / When)
  • N5-G-015: Group 2 Ru-verb Basics

🔍 Layer B: Deepening

💡 Raya’s Hack

Group 1 (-eba) vs Group 2 (-reba)!
Make sure you distinguish between verb groups when applying the ば conditional:

– Group 1 (u-verbs): Change -u to -e + ば ➡️ 飲む ➡️ 飲め + ば ➡️ 飲めば (nomeba)
– Group 2 (ru-verbs): Drop る + れば ➡️ 食べる ➡️ 食べ + れば ➡️ 食べれば (tabereba)

Remember: Never attach ば directly to a dictionary form verb (*taberuba* is wrong)! Always drop る and attach れば (reba) for Group 2 verbs.

🚧 Joy’s Mistake

Scene: Joy wants to say “If you watch this anime, it is interesting.”

Joy: 「この あにめを みるば、おもしろいですよ。」
(Kono anime o miruba, omoshiroi desu yo.)

❌ Attached “ば” directly to the dictionary form!

Why?

Joy attached ba directly to miru. In Japanese, you cannot attach ba directly to a dictionary form verb. For Group 2 verbs, you MUST drop ru and add れば (reba).

Correct: 「この あにめを みれば、おもしろいですよ。」 (If you watch this anime, it is interesting.)
