ば conditional (verb G1): Change final う to え + ば
Core / Hypothetical Conditions & Logic
👀 Layer A: Visual Guide
📝 Quick Summary
The ば conditional form (仮定形 – かていけい) expresses “if X happens, then Y will result”. For Group 1 verbs (う-verbs), change the final -u vowel of the dictionary form to its corresponding -e vowel and attach ば (ba).
Structure: [Group 1 Verb Dict Form (change final -u to -e)] + ば
Example 1: バスに のめば、まにあいます (If you take the bus, you will make it on time).
Example 2: くすりを のめば、なおります (If you drink medicine, you will recover).
🔍 Layer B: Deepening
💡 Raya’s Hack
The -u ➡️ -e + ば Shift Rule!
Group 1 verbs shift their final syllable to the -e row on the kana chart:
– 行く (iku) ➡️ 行け + ば ➡️ 行けば (ikeba)
– 飲む (nomu) ➡️ 飲め + ば ➡️ 飲めば (nomeba)
– 買う (kau) ➡️ 買え + ば ➡️ 買えば (kaeba)
– 待つ (matsu) ➡️ 待て + ば ➡️ 待てば (mateba)
– 話す (hanasu) ➡️ 話せ + ば ➡️ 話せば (hanaseba)
Remember: Never attach ば directly to the dictionary form (*nomuba* is wrong)!
🚧 Joy’s Mistake
Scene: Joy wants to say “If you drink this medicine, you will get better.”
Joy: 「この くすりを のむば、なおりますよ。」
(Kono kusuri o nomuba, naorimasu yo.)
❌ Attached “ば” directly to the dictionary form!
Why?
Joy attached ba directly to nomu. In Japanese, you cannot attach ba directly to a dictionary form verb. You MUST change the final -u sound to an -e sound first (のむ -u sound ➡️ -e sound = のめ + ば ➡️ のめば).
Correct: 「この くすりを のめば、なおりますよ。」 (If you drink this medicine, you will get better.)
