Noun + の はずです (Should be / Expected to be [Noun])
Core / Reasonable Expectation & Logical Certainty
👀 Layer A: Visual Guide
📝 Quick Summary
This grammar pattern connects a Noun to はずです using the particle の (no) to express a strong, logical expectation regarding a status, identity, day, or situation based on evidence or facts.
Structure: [Noun] + の + はずです
Example 1: きょうは にちようびですから、やすみの はずです (Because today is Sunday, it should be a day off).
Example 2: かれは わかいですから、がくせいの はずです (Because he is young, he should be a student).

💡 Raya’s Hack
The NO Connection Rule for Nouns!
Nouns connect to present affirmative hazu desu using の (no), following standard noun-noun combination rules:
– Present Affirmative: 休み の はずです (yasumi no hazu desu – should be a holiday)
– Present Negative: 休み じゃない はずです (yasumi janai hazu desu – should not be a holiday)
– Past Affirmative: 休み だった はずです (yasumi datta hazu desu – should have been a holiday)
Never use だ (da) before hazu!
🚧 Joy’s Mistake
Scene: Joy expects Tanaka-san to be a student based on his age.
Joy: 「たなかさんは がくせいだ はずです。」
(Tanaka-san wa gakusei da hazu desu.)
❌ Used “da” before はず!
Why?
Joy attached the plain copula da directly before hazu desu. For Nouns in present affirmative tense before hazu, you MUST replace da with the particle の (no).
Correct: 「たなかさんは がくせいの はずです。」 (Tanaka-san should be a student.)
