N4-G-051

な-adjective + な のに (Even though [Na-adjective])

Core / Frustrated Expectation & Contrast

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide

📝 Quick Summary

This grammar pattern connects a な-adjective to のに by attaching な (na) to express “even though” or “despite being [adjective]”. It highlights an unexpected or disappointing outcome that contrasts with the state or quality described.

Structure: [な-adjective Base] + な + のに
Example 1: この へやは しずかな のに、ねられません (Even though this room is quiet, I can’t sleep).
Example 2: べんりな のに、だれも つかいません (Even though it is convenient, nobody uses it).

🔗 Connected Grammar:

  • N4-G-049: Verb (plain form) + のに (Even though [Verb])
  • N4-G-050: い-adjective + のに (Even though [I-adj])
  • N4-G-052: Noun + な のに (Even though [Noun])
  • N5-G-010: な-adjective Basics

🔍 Layer B: Deepening

💡 Raya’s Hack

The NA Connection Rule!
Because noni acts like a noun-modifying structure, な-adjectives connect to present affirmative noni using な (na), just as if they were modifying a noun:

– Present Affirmative: 静かな のに (shizuka na noni – even though it is quiet)
– Present Negative: 静かじゃない のに (shizuka janai noni – even though it is not quiet)
– Past Affirmative: 静かだった のに (shizuka datta noni – even though it was quiet)

Never use だ (da) before noni!

🚧 Joy’s Mistake

Scene: Joy is complaining about a convenient tool that broke immediately.

Joy: 「これは べんりだ のに、すぐ こわれました。」
(Kore wa benri da noni, sugu kowaremashita.)

❌ Used “da” before のに!

Why?

Joy attached the plain copula da directly before noni. For な-adjectives in present affirmative tense before noni, you MUST replace da with na.

Correct: 「これは べんりな のに、すぐ こわれました。」 (Even though this is convenient, it broke right away.)
