N4-G-092

Verb (ない form) + くてもいいです (Don’t have to [Verb])

Core / Lack of Obligation & Permission

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide

📝 Quick Summary

This grammar pattern connects to a verb’s ない-form (by dropping the final い) to express that an action is not required or necessary (“you don’t have to…”, “it’s okay if you don’t…”). It indicates freedom from obligation.

Structure: [Verb ない-form (drop い)] + くてもいいです
Example 1: あしたは がっこうへ いかなくても いいです (You don’t have to go to school tomorrow).
Example 2: ここでは くつを ぬがなくても いいです (You don’t have to take off your shoes here).

🔗 Connected Grammar:

  • N4-G-093: Verb (ない form) + なければなりません (Must do [Verb])
  • N4-G-008: Verb て-form + もいいです (Allowed to do [Verb])
  • N4-G-009: Verb て-form + はいけません (Must not do [Verb])
  • N5-G-018: Verb ない-form Basics

🔍 Layer B: Deepening

💡 Raya’s Hack

Lack of Obligation vs. Prohibition!
Make sure you don’t confuse these two permissions:

– 〜なくてもいいです (Optional): 行かなくても いいです (“You don’t have to go” – It’s optional, go if you want!).
– 〜てはいけません (Prohibition): 行っては いけません (“You must not go” – Strictly forbidden!).

Connection Rule: Always drop the final い from the ない-form before adding くてもいいです (行かない ➡️ 行かなく + てもいいです)!

🚧 Joy’s Mistake

Scene: Joy wants to tell Ken that entry is free and he doesn’t have to pay money.

Joy: 「おかねを はらわない も いいです。」
(Okane o harawanai mo ii desu.)

❌ Kept “い” and attached “も” directly!

Why?

Joy attached mo ii desu directly to harawanai. To connect an い-ending negative word to temo ii desu, you MUST change the final い to く (ku).

Correct: 「おかねを はらわなくても いいです。」 (You don’t have to pay money.)
