Noun + なら (If [Noun] / As for [Noun])
Supporting / Contextual & Topic Conditions
👀 Layer A: Visual Guide
📝 Quick Summary
This grammar pattern attaches なら (nara) directly to a Noun to highlight or isolate a specific topic (“If it’s [Noun]”, “As for [Noun]”, “Speaking of [Noun]”). It is used when making a recommendation, offer, or decision based on a subject brought up in conversation.
Structure: [Noun] + なら
Example 1: かめら なら、この ブランドが おすすめです (If you’re looking for a camera, this brand is recommended).
Example 2: にほんりょうり なら、すしが いちばん すきです (If it’s Japanese food, I like sushi the best).
🔍 Layer B: Deepening
💡 Raya’s Hack
Direct Attachment for Nouns!
Nouns connect directly to nara without inserting any copula (da) or particle (no) in standard grammar:
– カメラ なら (kamera nara: if it’s a camera)
– 明日 なら (ashita nara: if it’s tomorrow)
– 寿司 なら (sushi nara: if it’s sushi)
Register Note: Use なら in spoken conversation when responding to someone’s topic. Use であれば (de areba) in formal written guidelines and official documents!
🚧 Joy’s Mistake
Scene: Joy wants to recommend a computer store to Ken after Ken mentions wanting a laptop.
Joy: 「パソコン だ なら、あの おみせが いいですよ。」
(Pasokon da nara, ano omise ga ii desu yo.)
❌ Inserted “だ” between the noun and なら!
Why?
Joy inserted the copula da before nara. In standard N4 Japanese grammar, nara attaches directly to a Noun without da.
Correct: 「パソコン なら、あの おみせが いいですよ。」 (If it’s a computer, that store is good.)
