GrammarBook: Change な → であれば (If [Na-adjective])

N4-G-086

Change な → であれば (If [Na-adjective])

Supporting / Hypothetical Conditions & Logic

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide

📝 Quick Summary

The ば conditional form (仮定形 – かていけい) for な-adjectives attaches であれば (de areba) to the adjective base (dropping な). It expresses “if X quality/condition is true, then Y will result” in formal, written, or business Japanese.

Structure: [な-adjective Base] + であれば
Example 1: ひつようで あれば、ていしゅつして ください (If it is necessary, please submit it).
Example 2: てつづきが かんたんで あれば、だれでも できます (If the procedure is simple, anyone can do it).

🔗 Connected Grammar:

  • N4-G-081: ば conditional (verb G1): Change final う to え + ば
  • N4-G-082: ば conditional (verb G2): Remove る + れば
  • N4-G-085: Change い → ければ (If [I-adjective])
  • N5-G-010: な-adjective Basics

🔍 Layer B: Deepening

💡 Raya’s Hack

であれば vs. なら: Formal Written Register!
Both nara and de areba express conditional “if” for な-adjectives, but they differ in register:

– なら (nara): Conversational & casual (“If it’s necessary…”)
– であれば (de areba): Formal, written, official guidelines & business (“In the event that it is necessary…”)

Remember: Always drop な (na) before attaching de areba (*hitsuyou na de areba* is wrong)!

🚧 Joy’s Mistake

Scene: Joy is writing an official rule document and wants to say “If it is necessary, please contact us.”

Joy: 「ひつような であれば、れんらくして ください。」
(Hitsuyou na de areba, renraku shite kudasai.)

❌ Kept “な” before であれば!

Why?

Joy kept na before de areba. You must remove na from the な-adjective when attaching de areba.

Correct: 「ひつようで あれば、れんらくして ください。」 (If it is necessary, please contact us.)
