Noun + であれば (If it is [Noun])
Core / Hypothetical Conditions & Logic
👀 Layer A: Visual Guide
📝 Quick Summary
The ば conditional form (仮定形 – かていけい) for Nouns attaches であれば (de areba) directly to the noun. It expresses “if X status/noun is true, then Y will result” in formal, written, or business Japanese.
Structure: [Noun] + であれば
Example 1: がくせいで あれば、わりびきが あります (If you are a student, there is a discount).
Example 2: かいいんで あれば、むりょうで つかえます (If you are a member, you can use it for free).
🔍 Layer B: Deepening
💡 Raya’s Hack
であれば vs. なら: Formal Written Register!
Both nara and de areba express conditional “if” for Nouns, but they differ in register:
– なら (nara): Conversational & casual (“If you’re a student…”)
– であれば (de areba): Formal, written, official guidelines & business (“In the event that you are a student…”)
Remember: Attach de areba directly to the noun (*gakusei da de areba* is wrong)!
🚧 Joy’s Mistake
Scene: Joy is writing an official rule document and wants to say “If you are a student, there is a discount.”
Joy: 「がくせいだ であれば、わりびきが あります。」
(Gakusei da de areba, waribiki ga arimasu.)
❌ Kept “だ” before であれば!
Why?
Joy attached da before de areba. Attach de areba directly to the noun without adding da.
Correct: 「がくせいで あれば、わりびきが あります。」 (If you are a student, there is a discount.)
