Change い → ければ (If [I-adjective])
Supporting / Hypothetical Conditions & Logic
👀 Layer A: Visual Guide
📝 Quick Summary
The ば conditional form (仮定形 – かていけい) expresses “if X quality/condition is true, then Y will result”. For い-adjectives, drop the final い (i) and attach ければ (kereba).
Structure: [い-adjective (drop い)] + ければ
Example 1: やすければ、かいます (If it is cheap, I will buy it).
Example 2: じかんが よければ、いきましょう (If the time is good/convenient, let’s go).
🔍 Layer B: Deepening
💡 Raya’s Hack
The “いい ➡️ よければ” Exception!
The most important exception to remember for い-adjectives is いい (ii – good):
– ❌ いい ➡️ いければ (ikereba – Wrong!)
– ⭕ いい ➡️ よければ (yokereba – Correct!)
Example: ごつごうが よければ、きて ください (If your schedule is good/convenient, please come).
Remember: Never attach ば directly to an い-adjective (*takaiba* is wrong)! Always drop い and attach ければ (kereba).
🚧 Joy’s Mistake
Scene: Joy wants to say “If this book is interesting, I will buy it.”
Joy: 「この ほんが おもしろいば、かいます。」
(Kono hon ga omoshiroiba, kaimasu.)
❌ Attached “ば” directly to the adjective!
Why?
Joy attached ba directly to omoshiroi. You cannot attach ba directly to an い-adjective. You MUST drop the final i and add ければ (kereba).
Correct: 「この ほんが おもしろければ、かいます。」 (If this book is interesting, I will buy it.)
🔥 Layer C: Retrieval Practice Loop
Retrieve and apply! Express conditional “if” with い-adjectives. (Hiragana and English only)
