N4-G-050

い-adjective + のに (Even though [I-adjective])

Core / Frustrated Expectation & Contrast

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide

📝 Quick Summary

This grammar pattern connects an い-adjective in its Plain Form directly to のに to express “even though” or “despite being [adjective]”. It highlights an unexpected or disappointing contrast between the quality of something and the final outcome.

Structure: [い-adjective Plain Form] + のに
Example 1: この レストランは たかい のに、おいしくないです (Even though this restaurant is expensive, it is not delicious).
Example 2: きょうは さむい のに、うすぎを しています (Even though it is cold today, he is wearing thin clothes).

🔗 Connected Grammar:

  • N4-G-049: Verb (plain form) + のに (Even though [Verb])
  • N4-G-051: な-adjective + な のに (Even though [Na-adj])
  • N4-G-052: Noun + な のに (Even though [Noun])
  • N5-G-008: い-adjective Basics

🔍 Layer B: Deepening

💡 Raya’s Hack

Conjugating I-adjectives Before NONI
Because noni connects to short plain forms, you can conjugate the い-adjective into past or negative tense before attaching noni:

– Present Affirmative: たかい のに (takai noni – even though it is expensive)
– Present Negative: たかくない のに (takakunai noni – even though it is not expensive)
– Past Affirmative: たかかった のに (takakatta noni – even though it was expensive)

Attach noni directly—do not add or keep です (desu)!

🚧 Joy’s Mistake

Scene: Joy is complaining about a costly shirt that ripped on the first day.

Joy: 「この ふくは たかいです のに、すぐ こわれました。」
(Kono fuku wa takai desu noni, sugu kowaremashita.)

❌ Used polite “desu” before のに!

Why?

Joy attached the polite ending desu right before noni. Clauses coming before noni MUST be in the Plain Form (Short form). Drop desu completely!

Correct: 「この ふくは たかい のに、すぐ こわれました。」 (Even though these clothes were expensive, they broke right away.)
