N4-G-049

Verb (plain form) + のに (Even though / Although [Verb])

Core / Frustrated Expectation & Contrast

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide

📝 Quick Summary

This grammar pattern connects to the Plain Form of a verb to express “even though” or “despite the fact that”. It connects an expected premise to an unexpected or disappointing outcome, often carrying a tone of frustration, surprise, or complaint.

Structure: [Verb Plain Form] + のに
Example 1: べんきょうした のに、てんすが わるかったです (Even though I studied, my score was bad).
Example 2: やくそくした のに、かれは こなかったです (Even though we promised, he didn’t come).

🔗 Connected Grammar:

  • N4-G-050: い-adjective + のに (Even though [I-adj])
  • N4-G-051: な-adjective + な のに (Even though [Na-adj])
  • N4-G-052: Noun + な のに (Even though [Noun])
  • N5-G-049: Verb Plain Form Basics

🔍 Layer B: Deepening

💡 Raya’s Hack

The Emotional Punch of NONI vs. KEDO
While kedo (けど) is a neutral “but”, noni (のに) carries strong feelings of disappointment, surprise, or complaint when the actual result contradicts what was expected.

– くすりを のんだ けど、なおりません (Neutral: I took medicine, but I didn’t get better.)
– くすりを のんだ のに、なおりません (Frustrated: Even though I took medicine, I’m still not better!)

🚧 Joy’s Mistake

Scene: Joy is complaining that he missed his train.

Joy: 「はやく おきました のに、でんしゃに おくれました。」
(Hayaku okimashita noni, densha ni okuremashita.)

❌ Used polite form before のに!

Why?

Joy used the polite form okimashita before noni. Clauses coming before noni MUST be in the Plain Form (Short form).

Correct: 「はやく おきた のに、でんしゃに おくれました。」 (Even though I woke up early, I missed the train.)
