な-adjective + な ばあいは (In the case of [Na-adjective])
Supporting / Expressing Contingency & Conditions
👀 Layer A: Visual Guide
📝 Quick Summary
This grammar pattern connects a な-adjective to ばあいは by attaching な (na) to set up a specific conditional scenario or contingency. It translates to “In the case that it is [adjective]…” or “In the event of [adjective]…” and is frequently used in official instructions, forms, and rules.
Structure: [な-adjective Base] + な + ばあいは
Example 1: ひつような ばあいは、れんらくして ください (In the event that it is necessary, please contact us).
Example 2: ひまな ばあいは、てつだって ください (In case you are free, please help out).
🔍 Layer B: Deepening
💡 Raya’s Hack
Always Use NA (Never DA) for Present Affirmative!
Because baai (場合) acts as a regular noun meaning “case/situation”, な-adjectives modify it using standard noun-modifying rules:
– Present Affirmative: 必要な な 場合 (hitsuyou na baai – in case it is necessary)
– Present Negative: 必要 じゃない 場合 (hitsuyou janai baai – in case it is not necessary)
– Past Affirmative: 必要 だった 場合 (hitsuyou datta baai – in case it was necessary)
Never keep だ (da) before baai!
🚧 Joy’s Mistake
Scene: Joy is filling out an event volunteer registration form.
Joy: 「ひつよう だ ばあいは、れんらくして ください。」
(Hitsuyou da baai wa, renraku shite kudasai.)
❌ Used “da” before ばあい!
Why?
Joy attached the plain copula da directly before baai wa. Clauses modifying a noun like baai MUST use na for な-adjectives in the present tense.
Correct: 「ひつよう な ばあいは、れんらくして ください。」 (In the event that it is necessary, please contact us.)
