なので (Because / Since [Noun or Na-adjective])
Core / Reason & Explanation
👀 Layer A: Visual Guide
📝 Quick Summary
This grammar pattern connects a Noun or な-adjective base to ので by inserting な (na) to state a polite, objective reason or cause (“because…”, “since…”). It provides a softer and more polite explanation than から (kara).
Structure: [Noun / な-adjective Base] + な + ので (= なので)
Example 1: きょうは やすみ なので、がっこうへ いきません (Because today is a day off, I don’t go to school).
Example 2: ここは しずか なので、べんきょうしやすいです (Because it is quiet here, it is easy to study).
🔍 Layer B: Deepening
💡 Raya’s Hack
The NA Connection Rule for ので!
When connecting word classes to ので (*node*):
– Verbs (Plain): ふる + ので ➡️ 降るので (*furu node*)
– い-adjectives: あつい + ので ➡️ 暑いので (*atsui node*)
– な-adjectives: しずか + な + ので ➡️ 静か**なので** (*shizuka na-node*)
– Nouns: やすみ + な + ので ➡️ 休み**なので** (*yasumi na-node*)
Never say だので (da-node)! Replace the plain copula da with な (na) whenever attaching Nouns or Na-adjectives to ので.
🚧 Joy’s Mistake
Scene: Joy wants to explain why he is not going to school today.
Joy: 「きょうは やすみ だので、がっこうへ いきません。」
(Kyou wa yasumi da-node, gakkou e ikimasen.)
❌ Used “だので” instead of “なので”!
Why?
Joy attached da before node. In Japanese, da-node is ungrammatical. When attaching a Noun or Na-adjective in present affirmative tense to node, you MUST replace da with な (na), forming なので (na-node).
Correct: 「きょうは やすみ なので、がっこうへ いきません。」 (Because today is a day off, I don’t go to school.)
