Noun + だ そうです (I heard that [Noun])
Core / Hearsay & Reporting Information
👀 Layer A: Visual Guide
📝 Quick Summary
This grammar pattern connects a Noun in its Plain Form (by attaching だ in present affirmative) to そうです to express hearsay (“I heard that…”, “They say it is…”). It allows you to pass along reported information about a status, day, or identity.
Structure: [Noun] + だ + そうです
Example 1: ニュースによると、あしたは やすみだ そうです (According to the news, I heard tomorrow is a holiday).
Example 2: ともだちによると、かれは がくせいだ そうです (According to my friend, I heard he is a student).
🔍 Layer B: Deepening
💡 Raya’s Hack
The DA Bridge for Nouns!
Just like な-adjectives, Nouns require the plain copula だ (da) in present affirmative tense before attaching sou desu:
– Present Affirmative: 休み だ そうです (yasumi da sou desu – I heard it is a holiday).
– Present Negative: 休み じゃない そうです (yasumi janai sou desu – I heard it is not a holiday).
– Past Affirmative: 休み だった そうです (yasumi datta sou desu – I heard it was a holiday).
Never drop だ or attach sou desu directly to a noun!
🚧 Joy’s Mistake
Scene: Joy is reporting to Ken about tomorrow’s office schedule.
Joy: 「あしたは やすみ そうです。」
(Ashita wa yasumi sou desu.)
❌ Omitted “だ” before そうです!
Why?
Joy attached sou desu directly to the noun yasumi. You cannot attach sou desu directly to a noun for hearsay—you MUST include the plain copula だ (da).
Correct: 「あしたは やすみだ そうです。」 (I heard tomorrow is a holiday.)
