Verbた + ばかり (Just finished doing [Verb])
Supporting / Perceived Recency
👀 Layer A: Visual Guide
📝 Quick Summary
This grammar pattern attaches to the Verb た-form to express that an action was completed very recently, or that the speaker feels as though it happened just now.
Structure: [Verb た-form] + ばかりです
Example 1: ひるごはんを たべた ばかりです (I just ate lunch).
Example 2: にほんに きた ばかりです (I just came to Japan).
🔍 Layer B: Deepening
💡 Raya’s Hack
Subjective Recency: BAKARI vs. TOKORO
Both ~ta bakari and ~ta tokoro translate to “just did [verb]”, but they have a key difference:
– たところ (ta-tokoro): Strict objective recency. The action finished seconds or minutes ago.
– たばかり (ta-bakari): Subjective recency. It depends on the speaker’s perception! You can say “Nihon ni kita bakari desu” even if you moved to Japan 1 or 2 months ago, because the experience still feels brand new to you.
🚧 Joy’s Mistake
Scene: Joy wants to say he just bought a brand-new smartphone.
Joy: 「あたらしい スマホを かう ばかりです。」
(Atarashii sumaho o kau bakari desu.)
❌ Used Dictionary form before ばかり!
Why?
Joy used the dictionary form kau. In Japanese, [Verb Dictionary Form] + bakari means “doing nothing but [Verb]” (e.g., “all I do is buy”). To express “just bought”, you MUST use the past-tense た-form (katta).
Correct: 「あたらしい スマホを かった ばかりです。」 (I just bought a new smartphone.)
🔥 Layer C: Retrieval Practice Loop
