N4-G-052

Noun + な のに (Even though [Noun])

Core / Frustrated Expectation & Contrast

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide

📝 Quick Summary

This grammar pattern connects a Noun to のに by attaching な (na) to express “even though” or “despite being [Noun]”. It highlights an unexpected or disappointing outcome that contrasts with a specific status, day, or identity.

Structure: [Noun] + な + のに
Example 1: きょうは にちようびな のに、しごとが あります (Even though today is Sunday, I have work).
Example 2: やすみな のに、はやく おきました (Even though it is a holiday, I woke up early).

🔗 Connected Grammar:

  • N4-G-049: Verb (plain form) + のに (Even though [Verb])
  • N4-G-050: い-adjective + のに (Even though [I-adj])
  • N4-G-051: な-adjective + な のに (Even though [Na-adj])
  • N5-G-001: Noun + です / だ Basics

🔍 Layer B: Deepening

💡 Raya’s Hack

The NA Connection Rule for Nouns!
Nouns connect to present affirmative noni using な (na), following the exact same noun-modifying rules as な-adjectives:

– Present Affirmative: 日曜日 な のに (nichiyoubi na noni – even though it is Sunday)
– Present Negative: 日曜日 じゃない のに (nichiyoubi janai noni – even though it is not Sunday)
– Past Affirmative: 日曜日 だった のに (nichiyoubi datta noni – even though it was Sunday)

Never use だ (da) before noni!

🚧 Joy’s Mistake

Scene: Joy is complaining about having to work on a weekend.

Joy: 「にちようび だ のに、しごとが あります。」
(Nichiyoubi da noni, shigoto ga arimasu.)

❌ Used “da” before のに!

Why?

Joy attached the plain copula da directly before noni. For Nouns in present affirmative tense before noni, you MUST replace da with na.

Correct: 「にちようび な のに、しごとが あります。」 (Even though it is Sunday, I have work.)
