💡 Raya’s Hack
Conjugating ~Sugiru as a Group 2 Verb
Once you combine a verb stem with sugimasu, the resulting compound word becomes a brand new Group 2 (Ru-verb)! You can conjugate it into all standard verb forms:
– Plain Form: 飲み過ぎる (nomisugiru – to overdrink)
– Te-Form: 飲み過ぎて (nomisugite – overdrinking and…) ➡️ Nomisugite onaka ga itai desu (My stomach hurts because I drank too much).
– Negative Form: 飲み過ぎない (nomisuginai – to not overdrink)
🚧 Joy’s Mistake
Scene: Joy is complaining that he bought too many clothes.
Joy: 「ふくを かいます すぎました。」
(Fuku o kaimasu sugimashita.)
❌ Forgot to drop “masu”!
Why?
Joy left the particle-like masu ending attached to the verb kaimasu. When building compound verbs with sugimasu, you MUST drop masu completely to leave only the raw verb stem (kai).
Correct: 「ふくを かいすぎました。」 (I bought too many clothes.)
