な-adjective + なら (If [Na-adjective])

Core / Contextual & Topic Conditions

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide

📝 Quick Summary

This grammar pattern connects a な-adjective base (dropping な) directly to なら (nara) to set up a contextual condition (“If [it is / you are] X”). It is used when making a request, suggestion, or decision based on a state mentioned by the speaker or listener.

Structure: [な-adjective Base] + なら
Example 1: ひま なら、てつだって ください (If you are free, please help out).
Example 2: てつづきが かんたん なら、じぶんで します (If the procedure is simple, I will do it myself).

🔗 Connected Grammar:

  • N4-G-086: Change な → であれば (Formal: If [Na-adjective])
  • N4-G-088: Verb (dict. form) + なら (If [Verb])
  • N4-G-089: い-adjective + なら (If [I-adjective])
  • N5-G-010: な-adjective Basics

🔍 Layer B: Deepening

💡 Raya’s Hack

Drop “な” Before なら!
When attaching nara to な-adjectives, simply drop な (na):

– 暇な ➡️ 暇 なら (hima nara: if you are free)
– 簡単な ➡️ 簡単 なら (kantan nara: if it is simple)
– 静かな ➡️ 静か なら (shizuka nara: if it is quiet)

Register Note: While nara is widely used in spoken conversation, であれば (de areba) is its formal, written counterpart used in official guidelines and business writing!

🚧 Joy’s Mistake

Scene: Joy wants to ask Ken for help because Ken mentioned having free time.

Joy: 「ひまな なら、てつだって ください。」
(Hima na nara, tetsudatte kudasai.)

❌ Kept “な” before なら!

Why?

Joy kept na before nara. You must remove na from the な-adjective base when attaching nara.

Correct: 「ひま なら、てつだって ください。」 (If you are free, please help out.)

🔥 Layer C: Retrieval Practice Loop
