い-adjective + なら (If [I-adjective])
Core / Contextual & Topic Conditions
👀 Layer A: Visual Guide
📝 Quick Summary
This grammar pattern connects an い-adjective in its Plain Form directly to なら (nara) to set up a contextual condition (“If [it is / you say it is] X”). It is used when making a suggestion, offer, or decision based on a quality or state mentioned by the speaker or listener.
Structure: [い-adjective Plain Form] + なら
Example 1: あつい なら、えあこんを つけましょう (If it’s hot, let’s turn on the air conditioner).
Example 2: やすい なら、いま かった ほうが いいですよ (If it’s cheap, you should buy it now).
🔍 Layer B: Deepening
💡 Raya’s Hack
〜ければ vs. 〜なら for い-adjectives!
Distinguish between the two conditional forms for い-adjectives:
– 〜ければ (Hypothetical Condition): 安い ➡️ 安ければ 買います (If it is cheap, I will buy it – Pure hypothetical rule).
– 〜なら (Contextual Topic/Reaction): 安い なら 買います (If [you say] it’s cheap, I’ll buy it right now – Reacting to context or advice).
Never insert だ (da) between an い-adjective and なら (*atsui da nara* is wrong)! Keep the trailing い intact.
🚧 Joy’s Mistake
Scene: Joy wants to suggest turning on the air conditioner because Ken complained about the heat.
Joy: 「あつい だ なら、えあこんを つけましょう。」
(Atsui da nara, eakon o tsukemashou.)
❌ Inserted “だ” before なら!
Why?
Joy inserted the copula da between the い-adjective atsui and nara. Only Nouns and Na-adjectives can take da (optional) before nara. い-adjectives MUST attach directly to nara in plain form while keeping the final い.
Correct: 「あつい なら、えあこんを つけましょう。」 (If it’s hot, let’s turn on the air conditioner.)
