きっと (Adverb: Surely / I’m sure that)

Supporting / High Certainty & Encouragement

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide

📝 Quick Summary

きっと (kitto) is an adverb used to express high certainty, strong personal conviction, or warm encouragement (“surely”, “almost certainly”, “I’m sure that”). It often pairs with sentence-ending patterns like 〜でしょう, 〜はずです, or 〜とおもいます.

Structure: きっと + [Sentence Clause]
Example 1: かれは きっと きます (He will surely come).
Example 2: あしたは きっと いい てんきに なります (Tomorrow will surely become good weather).

🔗 Connected Grammar:

  • N4-G-054: Verb (plain form) + はずです (Should / Expected to)
  • N4-G-055: い-adjective + はずです (Should be [I-adj])
  • N5-G-038: だろう / でしょう (Probably)

🔍 Layer B: Deepening

💡 Raya’s Hack

KITTO vs. TABUN: Degree of Faith!
Be careful choosing between tabun and kitto:

– たぶん (tabun): ~50% certainty (Maybe / Perhaps).
– きっと (kitto): ~90%+ certainty (Surely / I’m certain!).

When reassuring a friend before an exam or job interview, never use tabun (“Maybe you’ll pass”). Use きっと (“You will surely pass!”) to show strong support!

🚧 Joy’s Mistake

Scene: Joy is trying to encourage Ken before a big sports match.

Joy: 「けんさん、たぶん かちますよ!」
(Ken-san, tabun kachimasu yo!)

❌ Used “tabun” (maybe) for encouragement!

Why?

Using tabun makes it sound like Joy is doubting Ken’s chances (“You might win, I guess”). To show strong conviction and encouragement, Joy should use きっと.

Correct: 「けんさん、きっと かちますよ!」 (Ken-san, you will surely win!)
