Verb (dictionary form) + のを忘れました (Forgot to do X)
Core / Nominalization & Forgetting Actions
👀 Layer A: Visual Guide
📝 Quick Summary
This grammar pattern turns a verb phrase into an object noun phrase using の (no) and marks it as the direct object of 忘れました (wasuremashita) using を (o). Use this when you forgot to perform a planned or required action.
Structure: [Verb Dict Form] + のを 忘れました
Example 1: でんきを けす のを 忘れました (I forgot to turn off the lights).
Example 2: ぎゅうにゅうを かう のを 忘れました (I forgot to buy milk).
🔍 Layer B: Deepening
💡 Raya’s Hack
Item vs. Action Distinction
Be careful not to mix up forgetting a physical item versus forgetting an action!
– 🔑 Item: かぎを 忘れました (I forgot my keys – Item).
– 🔒 Action: かぎを かける のを 忘れました (I forgot to lock the door – Action).
Whenever you include an active verb before wasuremashita, you must install the nominalizer の as the bridge!
🚧 Joy’s Mistake
Scene: Joy is talking about mailing a letter.
Joy: 「てがみを だす を 忘れました。」
(Tegami o dasu o wasuremashita.)
❌ Missing Nominalizer “の”!
Why?
In Japanese, the object particle を (o) can only connect to nouns, never directly to verbs. You cannot say dasu o. You must insert の (no) to turn “sending the letter” into a noun phrase.
Correct: 「てがみを だす のを 忘れました。」 (I forgot to send the letter.)
🔥 Layer C: Retrieval Practice Loop
