GrammarBook N5: ~たり~たりします

N5-G-048

~たり~たりします (Varied actions)

Supporting / Listing

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide (直感理解)

📝 Quick Summary (まとめ)

いくつかの動作の中から、代表的なものを2〜3個ピックアップして伝える表現です。「Aをしたり、Bをしたりします(他にもあるけど)」というニュアンスです。
Use this pattern to list representative actions (“I do things like A and B…”). Unlike the “Te-form”, it implies there are other unmentioned actions, and the order is not strictly chronological.

Structure: [Verb TA-ri]、[Verb TA-ri] します。
([Verb TA]ri, [Verb TA]ri shimasu.)

🔗 Connected Grammar (関連文法):

  • N5-G-050: Plain Past Form (Ta-form)
  • N5-G-026: ~て (Sequence – Difference)

🔍 Layer B: Deepening (深掘り)

💡 Raya’s Hack (攻略法)

最後は必ず「します」で締(し)める!
「~たり、~たり」と言ったら、最後は必ず「します(または しました)」で終わらせるのがルール。
× 食べたり、飲んだりです。
〇 食べたり、飲んだり します。
過去の話なら「食べたり、飲んだり しました」に変えるだけ!「たり」の部分はいじらなくてOK!

Always close the sentence with “Shimasu” (or “Suru”). The “Tari” parts are frozen. To change the tense to past, just change the final “Shimasu” to “Shimashita”.

🚧 Joy’s Mistake (よくある間違い)

Scene: Joy describes his Sunday.

Joy: 「日曜日は 本を 読んでり、寝たりしました。」
(Hon o yonderi, netari shimashita.)

❌ Form Error!

Why?

「テ形+り」ではありません。「タ形+り」です。
「読んで (Yonde)」ではなく「読んだ (Yonda)」を使います。
正解は「本を 読んだり」です。

Joy used the Te-form + ri (“Yonde-ri”). This is wrong. You must use the TA-form + ri. “YonDA-ri”.

🔥 Layer C: Practice Loop

Now it’s time to test your learning through the next 10 practice drills!

Level 1: Make the Tari-Form

Q1. Taberu (Eat) → Tabetari
答え: 食べたり (Tabetari)

(Tabeta + ri)

Q2. Miru (Watch) → Mitari
答え: 見たり (Mitari)

(Mita + ri)

Q3. Iku (Go) → Ittari
答え: 行ったり (Ittari)

(Itta + ri)

Q4. Yomu (Read) → Yondari
答え: 読んだり (Yondari)

(Yonda + ri)

Q5. Suru (Do) → Shitari
答え: したり (Shitari)

(Shita + ri)

Level 2: Full Sentences

Q6. Translate: “I do things like read books and listen to music.” (Kiku)
答え: 本を 読んだり、音楽を 聞いたり します。

(Hon o yondari, ongaku o kiitari shimasu.)

Q7. Translate: “On Sunday, I did things like clean and do laundry.” (Souji, Sentaku)
答え: 日曜日は 掃除したり、洗濯したり しました。

(Souji shitari, sentaku shitari shimashita. *Past tense*)

Q8. Translate: “I want to do things like swim and fish.” (Oyogu, Tsuri o suru)
答え: 泳いだり、釣りを したり したいです。

(…shitari shitai desu. *Tai form at the end*)

Q9. Translate: “Yesterday, did you do things like go to Tokyo?”
答え: 昨日、東京へ 行ったり しましたか?

(Tokyo e ittari shimashita ka? *Single Tari is allowed*)

Q10. Translate: “On holidays, I do things like sleep.” (Yasumi, Neru)
答え: 休みは 寝たり します。

(Netari shimasu. *Implies sleep and maybe other relaxing things*)
