日本人がよく言う「そうそう」ってどういう意味?3
( Raya pointing at Joy’s phone, saying “Sou Sou!”, sitting with Joy and Ken in a cafe with a sleeping orange cat nearby)

Welcome to “Japanese You Keep Seeing”!

Welcome back to the Studio! We’re decoding the common, real-world Japanese phrases that textbooks often gloss over. Today, we look at a word of absolute agreement that you will hear *all the time* in Japanese conversation: そうそう (Sou Sou). It’s not a comparison of A vs B, it’s the warm ‘Exactly!’ or ‘That’s right!’ you hear everywhere. Let’s see what happens when the team plans their next collaborative design session at a modern cafe in Harajuku.

🗣 Conversation Scene

Joy, Ken, and Raya are having a planning session at a modern cafe overlooking Harajuku’s busy streets. The table is cluttered with laptops and strategy notes. Joy finds a perfect place for their next team strategy meeting on Instagram.

Joy
このカフェ、Malaysia向けSocial Media戦略のミーティングに良さそうですね!(This cafe looks great for the Malaysia social media strategy meeting!)
Ken
そうだね。そしてこのカフェはWi-Fiと電源もあるよ。(That’s right. And this cafe has Wi-Fi and power outlets too.)
Raya
Line 1: そうそう!
Line 2: Sō sō!
Line 3: (That’s right! Exactly!)

レビューもすごく高いですよ!(That’s right! Exactly! The reviews are really high too!)

💡 Explanation: The Power of Agreement

Raya’s enthusiastic use of そうそう (Sou Sou) is a perfect example of how Japanese speakers use agreement to show active listening, validation, and shared understanding, especially in casual or friendly contexts.

1. What does ‘Sou Sou’ Mean?

Literally, it’s ‘that that,’ but functionally it means ‘Exactly!’, ‘That’s right!’, or ‘You got it!’ It’s the ultimate ‘I agree with everything you just said and I’m enthusiastic about it’ response. You use it when someone confirms a detail you already know, or when they express an opinion you completely share.

2. The Nuance of Repetition

Japanese thrives on repetition for emphasis. Compare it to other forms of agreement:

  • そうだね (Sou da ne)
That’s true / That’s so. (A common, slightly formal but casual agreement, like Ken used.)
  • そうです (Sou desu)
That is so. (Standard Polite Agreement)
  • そうそう (Sou Sou)
Exactly! You got it! (This repetition shows empathy, energy, and indicates you’re completely ‘on the same page’.)

3. The ‘Aizuchi’ (Active Listening)

Japanese conversation uses frequent short responses called aizuchi (相槌) to show the speaker you are engaged. ‘Sou Sou’ is a powerful form of aizuchi. When someone confirms a fact, says a name you were trying to remember, or shares a relevant detail, saying ‘Sou Sou’ shows validation and keeps the collaborative energy high. When Ken confirmed the Wi-Fi, Raya validated his excellent point with ‘Sou Sou!’

💎 Pro Tip: Use it when confirming collaborative details

Collaborating on visual design like Joy and Raya are doing is perfect for ‘Sou Sou’. If Joy confirms the color balance is good, Raya might validate it with ‘Sou Sou!’. Try it out next time you confirm a detail, a name, or even a shared opinion on visual communication aesthetics in Studio Season 1!
