お店で見る「おすすめ」ってどういう意味? (Joy holding a tray in a Japanese bakery asking Ken “Osusume wa?”, with Raya buying bread and an orange cat in a baker’s hat hiding behind baguettes)

Welcome to “Japanese You Keep Seeing”!

Have you ever walked into a Japanese restaurant, looked at a massive menu with no English translations, and panicked? Don’t worry! There is one magical word that will save you every single time: おすすめ (Osusume). Whether it is written on a colorful sign in a shop or used in conversation, this word guarantees you will get the best experience possible. Let’s see how it works!

🗣 Conversation Scene

Joy, Ken, and Raya are visiting a famous local Japanese bakery (Pan-ya) to grab a quick lunch. The shop is filled with dozens of different sweet and savory breads, and Joy has no idea what to choose.
Joy
Line 1: おすすめは? Line 2: Osusume wa? Line 3: (What do you recommend?)
パンの種類が多すぎて選べないです!Kenさんのおすすめは? (There are too many kinds of bread, I can’t choose! What is your recommendation, Ken-san?)
Ken
このお店の「おすすめ」はカレーパンですよ。一番人気です! (This shop’s “recommendation” is the curry bread. It’s the most popular!)
Raya
Look Joy, there’s even a big sign next to it that says “Osusume”!

💡 Explanation: The Magic Word

The word おすすめ (Osusume) comes from the verb susumeru, which means “to recommend” or “to advise.” Adding the polite “O” to the front turns it into a respectful noun: “A recommendation.”

1. Seeing it in Shops (The “Staff Pick”) 🏷️

When you walk into a Japanese restaurant, cafe, or souvenir shop, you will often see items marked with おすすめ or 店長のおすすめ (Tenchou no osusume – Manager’s recommendation). If you cannot read the menu, just point to the item with this sign, and you are guaranteed to get the shop’s specialty or best-seller!

2. Asking for Advice 🙋‍♀️

If you don’t know what to order or what to buy, you can simply ask the staff for their advice. This is considered very polite and flattering in Japan! ✅ おすすめは何ですか? (Osusume wa nan desu ka?) = What is your recommendation?

3. Giving Advice to Friends 💬

You can also use it to suggest things to your friends. If you found a great new anime or a fantastic restaurant, you can say: これ、おすすめだよ! (Kore, osusume da yo!) = I highly recommend this!

💎 Pro Tip: Osusume vs. Omakase

Do not confuse Osusume with Omakase! Osusume: Asking for a suggestion, but you still make the final choice. Omakase: Completely leaving it up to the chef. (Usually much more expensive, often used at high-end sushi restaurants!)

🔥 Practice Quiz

Q1. You are at a ramen shop and the ticket machine is entirely in Japanese. You want to ask the staff what the best bowl is. What do you say? A. Osusume wa nan desu ka? B. Omakase desu.
Answer: A (Osusume wa nan desu ka?) This politely asks the staff for their recommendation so you can make your choice.
Q2. You see a sign in a bakery that says “Tenchou no osusume”. What does this mean? A. Manager’s Recommendation (Staff Pick) B. Sold Out
Answer: A “Tenchou” means manager, and “Osusume” means recommendation. It’s a great item to buy!
Q3. You sit down at a high-end sushi bar and want the chef to serve you whatever is fresh today without you looking at a menu. What word do you use? A. Osusume B. Omakase
Answer: B (Omakase) Omakase means “I leave it entirely up to you.” Osusume is just asking for advice!
