Verb + させない (Won’t let / Won’t make [Verb])
Supporting / Refusing Permission & Compulsion
👀 Layer A: Visual Guide
📝 Quick Summary
The Causative Negative Form (使役否定形) expresses refusing permission (“won’t let someone do X”) or refusing to force someone (“won’t make someone do X”). Because all causative verbs end in 〜せる or 〜させる, they conjugate into negative form using standard Group 2 (る-verb) rules.
Structure:
・Group 1 (u-verbs): Verb stem (-u ➡️ -a) + せない / せません (e.g. いかせる ➡️ いかせない)
・Group 2 (ru-verbs): Verb stem (drop る) + させない / させません (e.g. たべさせる ➡️ たべさせない)
・Group 3 (irregular): くる ➡️ こさせない / する ➡️ させない
Example 1: おかあんは こどもに げーむを させません (The mother won’t let the child play games).
Example 2: わたしは こどもに あぶない ことを させない (I won’t let my child do dangerous things).

💡 Raya’s Hack
Easy Rule: All Causatives Are Group 2 Verbs!
Once a verb becomes causative (*-seru* or *-saseru*), it functions as a regular Group 2 verb. Making it negative is as simple as dropping the trailing る (ru) and adding ない (nai) or ません (masen):
– Plain Negative: 行かせる ➡️ 行かさせない ❌ ➡️ 行かせない ⭕ (ika-senai)
– Polite Negative: 行かせる ➡️ 行かせません (ika-semasen)
Remember: Group 1 verbs end in -せない (-senai), while Group 2 verbs end in -させない (-sasenai)!
🚧 Joy’s Mistake
Scene: Joy wants to say he won’t let his child go out late at night alone.
Joy: 「こどもを ひとりでは いかさせない。」
(Kodomo o hitori de wa ikasasenai.)
❌ Added an extra “さ” to a Group 1 verb!
Why?
Joy attached *-sasenai* to *iku* (a Group 1 verb). Only Group 2 verbs use *-sasenai* (*tabe-sasenai*). Group 1 verbs change the final vowel sound to -a and add *-senai* (*ika-senai*).
Correct: 「こどもを ひとりでは いかせない。」 (I won’t let my child go out alone.)
