お + Verb (stem) + になります (Respectful Honorific / Sonkeigo)
Supporting / Respecting Others’ Actions
👀 Layer A: Visual Guide
📝 Quick Summary
This grammar pattern is a regular formula for creating Sonkeigo (尊敬語 – Respectful Language). It elevates the action of a superior, customer, or honored guest to show deep respect.
Structure: お + [Verb ます-stem] + になります / になりました
Example 1: しゃちょうは もう おかえり になりました (The company president has already returned home).
Example 2: こちらの ぺんを おつかい になりますか (Will you use this pen? [to a customer/boss]).
🔍 Layer B: Deepening
💡 Raya’s Hack
The Golden Rule of Sonkeigo: NEVER Use on Yourself!
Sonkeigo elevates the person performing the verb. Because of this:
– ⭕ Correct: 社長が おかえりに なります (The boss returns home – elevating the boss).
– ❌ Wrong: わたしが おかえりに なります (I return home – NEVER elevate yourself!).
Special Note: Single-syllable stem verbs (like 見る ➡️ み, 行く ➡️ い) do not use this pattern. They have special honorific verbs like ご覧になる or いらっしゃる instead!
🚧 Joy’s Mistake
Scene: Joy is telling a customer that HE (Joy) bought the book earlier.
Joy: 「わたしが この ほんを おかい になりました。」
(Watashi ga kono hon o okai ni narimashita.)
❌ Used respectful Sonkeigo for his own action!
Why?
Joy used o-kai ni narimashita to describe his own action. Sonkeigo honors the listener or subject, so you must NEVER use it for yourself. To describe your own action politely, use standard polite form (かいました) or humble form (かいました/おかいしました).
Correct: 「わたしが この ほんを かいました。」 (I bought this book.) / 「たなかさまが おかい になりました。」 (Tanaka-sama bought this book.)
🔥 Layer C: Retrieval Practice Loop
Retrieve and apply! Express respectful honorific actions for superiors. (Hiragana and English only)
