N4-G-074

Group 2 causative (る-verbs): Remove る + させる

Supporting / Expressing Compulsion & Permission

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide

📝 Quick Summary

The Causative Form (使役形 – しえきけい) expresses making someone do an action (compulsion) or letting someone do an action (permission). For Group 2 verbs (る-verbs), drop the final る (ru) from the dictionary form and attach させる (saseru).

Structure: [Group 2 Verb Dict Form (drop る)] + させる / させます
Example 1: おかあんは こどもに やさいを たべさせます (The mother makes/lets the child eat vegetables).
Example 2: せんせいは がくせいに びでおを みさせました (The teacher made/let the students watch a video).

🔗 Connected Grammar:

  • N4-G-073: Group 1 causative (う-verbs): Change u → a + せる
  • N4-G-075: Group 3 causative (くる ➡️ こさせる / する ➡️ させる)
  • N4-G-076: Causative 〜させて ください (Please let me do)
  • N5-G-015: Group 2 Ru-verb Basics

🔍 Layer B: Deepening

💡 Raya’s Hack

Group 1 (-せる) vs. Group 2 (-させる)!
Do not forget the さ (sa) syllable when conjugating Group 2 verbs into the causative form:

– Group 1 (u-verb): よむ ➡️ よま + せる ➡️ よませる (yomaseru)
– Group 2 (ru-verb): たべる ➡️ たべ + させる ➡️ たべさせる (tabesaseru)

Remember: All causative verbs (*-saseru* or *-seru*) become Group 2 verbs themselves and conjugate using Ru-verb rules (e.g., *tabesaseru* ➡️ *tabesasemasu* / *tabesasetai*)!

🚧 Joy’s Mistake

Scene: Joy wants to say he let his younger brother watch anime.

Joy: 「おとうとに あにめを みせました。」
(Otouto ni anime o misemashita.)

❌ Used “みせる” (to show) instead of causative “みさせる”!

Why?

Joy used miseru, which means “to show something to someone” (e.g., “I showed anime to my brother”). To express “I let my brother watch anime” (causative permission), he MUST drop ru and add させる (saseru).

Correct: 「おとうとに あにめを みさせました。」 (I let my younger brother watch anime.)
