N4-G-055

い-adjective + はずです (Should be / Expected to be [I-adj])

Core / Reasonable Expectation & Logical Certainty

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide

📝 Quick Summary

This grammar pattern connects an い-adjective in its Plain Form directly to はずです to express a strong, logical expectation regarding a state or quality based on evidence, price, reputation, or circumstances.

Structure: [い-adjective Plain Form] + はずです
Example 1: この レストランは たかいですから、おいしい はずです (Because this restaurant is expensive, it should be delicious).
Example 2: けさ くすりを のみましたから、もう いたくない はずです (Because I took medicine this morning, it shouldn’t be painful anymore).

🔗 Connected Grammar:

  • N4-G-054: Verb (plain form) + はずです (Should / Expected to [Verb])
  • N4-G-056: な-adjective + な はずです (Should be [Na-adj])
  • N5-G-008: い-adjective Basics

🔍 Layer B: Deepening

💡 Raya’s Hack

Conjugating I-adjectives Before HAZU DESU
Because hazu grammatically functions like a noun, い-adjectives modify it directly in short plain form:

– Present Affirmative: おいしい はずです (oishii hazu desu – should be delicious)
– Present Negative: おいしくない はずです (oishikunai hazu desu – should not be delicious)
– Past Affirmative: おいしかった はずです (oishikatta hazu desu – should have been delicious)

Never leave です (desu) attached before hazu!

🚧 Joy’s Mistake

Scene: Joy is expecting a hotel room to be cold because the air conditioner is on.

Joy: 「へやは すずしいです はずです。」
(Heya wa suzushii desu hazu desu.)

❌ Used polite “desu” before はず!

Why?

Joy attached the polite ending desu right before hazu desu. Clauses modifying hazu MUST be in the Plain Form (Short form). Drop the inner desu completely!

Correct: 「へやは すずしい はずです。」 (The room should be cool.)
