GrammarBook N5: ~てはいけません

N5-G-025

~てはいけません (Prohibition)

Supporting / Te-form

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide (直感理解)

📝 Quick Summary (まとめ)

「禁止(きんし)」を表す強い表現です。「~してはいけない」「~してはだめだ」とルールを伝えるときに使います。
Use this pattern to express a prohibition or a rule (“You must not…”). It is stronger than a simple request.

Structure: [Verb Te-form] + は いけません (wa ikemasen).

🔗 Connected Grammar (関連文法):

  • N5-G-024: ~てもいいです (Permission)
  • N5-G-022: ~てください (Request)

🔍 Layer B: Deepening (深掘り)

💡 Raya’s Hack (攻略法)

「は (WA)」を忘れないで!
「食べてはいけません」の「は」は、アクション(食べること)をトピックにして、「それはダメ!」と言っているんだ。
「食べていけません」だと音がつながって弱く聞こえるよ。「は」でしっかり区切ろう!

Don’t forget the “WA”! It highlights the action as the topic (“As for eating…”) and then slams the door with “Ikemasen” (“It is a no-go!”).

🚧 Joy’s Mistake (よくある間違い)

Scene: Joy yells at someone not to run.

Joy: 「走る はいけません!」
(Hashiru wa ikemasen!)

❌ Wrong!

Why?

「走る (Hashiru)」は辞書形です。「は」の前は必ず「て形 (Te-form)」にします。
正解は「走って はいけません (Hashitte wa ikemasen)」です。

You cannot use the Dictionary Form before “wa”. You must change the verb to Te-form first. Correct: “Hashitte wa ikemasen”.
