GrammarBook N5: ~ています (Progressive State / Action)

  • 09 Jan, 2026

N5-G-023

~ています (Continuous Action / State)

Supporting / Te-form

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide (直感理解)

📝 Quick Summary (まとめ)

「今(いま)、~している(進行中)」を表す形です。また、「結婚(けっこん)している」や「知(し)っている」のような「状態(じょうたい)の継続(けいぞく)」も表します。
This form expresses two things: 1) Actions happening RIGHT NOW (Present Continuous), and 2) A continuing state (like being married or living somewhere).

Structure: [Verb Te-form] + います (imasu).

🔗 Connected Grammar (関連文法):

  • N5-G-022: ~てください (Te-form Request)
  • N5-G-015: Verb Groups (Rules for Te-form)

🔍 Layer B: Deepening (深掘り)

💡 Raya’s Hack (攻略法)

「アクション」だけじゃない!「ステータス」も表すよ!
走っている (Running) はアクション。
でも、結婚している (Married) や 住んでいる (Living in) は「アクション」じゃなくて「今のステータス」だよね。これも「~ています」を使うんだ!

It’s not just for action! It’s for STATUS too. “Married” (Kekkon shite imasu) and “Living in” (Sunde imasu) describe your current status, so they also use the Te-imasu form.

🚧 Joy’s Mistake (よくある間違い)

Scene: Joy wants to say he is eating now.

Joy: 「今(いま) 食べる います!」
(Ima taberu imasu!)

❌ Wrong!

Why?

辞書形(じしょけい)「食べる」に「います」はつきません。
必ず「て形 (Te-form)」でつないでください。
正解は「食べて います」です。

You cannot attach “imasu” to the Dictionary Form. You must use the Te-form connector. Correct: “Tabe-te imasu”.
