Use these patterns to describe the order of actions (“Before doing X…”, “After doing Y…”). Pay attention to the verb forms!

* **～前に (Before):** まだしていないから「辞書形（原形）」。(食べる 前に)
* **～後で (After):** もう終わったことだから「タ形（過去）」。(食べた 後で)
名詞のときは、どちらも「の (NO)」をつけるだけ！ (食事の 前に / 食事の 後で)
Memorize the rhythm: “Dictionary before Mae, TA before Ato”. “Before” is potential (Dictionary form). “After” is completed (TA form). For Nouns, just add “NO” (Noun + no + mae ni / ato de).

Scene: Joy washes his hands before eating.
Joy: 「ご飯を 食べた 前に 手を洗います。」
(Gohan o tabeta mae ni te o araimasu.)
❌ Time Paradox!
Why?
「食べた（過去）」のに「前に（Before）」というのは矛盾(むじゅん)しています。「前に」の前は必ず「辞書形（食べる）」です。
正解は「ご飯を 食べる 前に」です。
You can’t say “Before I ate”. “Mae ni” implies the action hasn’t happened yet relative to the main verb. Always use the Dictionary Form: “Taberu mae ni”.
