What is the Japanese Language Proficiency Test JLPT N5?

The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is a test to measure the Japanese language proficiency of people who are not native speakers of Japanese.
The JLPT is divided into five levels, with N5 being the lowest. N5 measures whether you can communicate in basic Japanese in daily life.

Japanese language proficiency required for N5

  • Reading and writing of Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji
  • Basic grammar

Content of the N5 Exam

  • Language knowledge (characters and vocabulary): Reading and writing kanji, hiragana, and katakana, meanings of basic words and phrases

  • Listening comprehension: Listening to simple conversations and announcements

 

Study Period Required to Pass JLPT N5

The study period required to pass N5 varies depending on the individual’s Japanese language proficiency and learning method, but it is generally said to be 3 to 6 months.

 

Study Guidelines

  • If studying 1 hour per day, you can aim to pass in 3 months.
  • If studying 2 hours, 3 times a week, you can aim to pass in 4 months.
  • For self-study, choosing materials and planning may take time, so attending prep schools or taking online lessons can be more efficient.

 

Learning Methods for JLPT N5

  • In order to pass N5, it is important to focus on the following points.
  • Master the reading and writing of kanji, hiragana, and katakana
  • Understand basic grammar
