GrammarBook N5: もらいます (To receive)

  • 01 Feb, 2026

N5-G-061

もらいます (To receive)

Peripheral / Giving & Receiving

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide (直感理解)

📝 Quick Summary (まとめ)

「誰かから物をもらう(受け取る)」ときに使います。主語は「受け取る人(私)」です。
Use “Moraimasu” when you (or someone else) receive something from another person. The subject is the Receiver.

Structure: [Receiver] は [Giver] に [Object] を もらいます。
(Watashi wa Tomodachi ni Purezento o Moraimasu.)

🔗 Connected Grammar (関連文法):

  • N5-G-059: あげます (To Give – Opposite)
  • N5-G-060: くれます (Give to Me – Different Subject)

🔍 Layer B: Deepening (深掘り)

💡 Raya’s Hack (攻略法)

「に」は「から (From)」!
「もらいます」の文で、くれる人(Giver)の後ろにつく「に (NI)」は、「~から (KARA)」と言い換えることができます。
〇 友達 に もらいました。
〇 友達 から もらいました。
どちらもOK!「に」が分かりにくかったら、「から (FROM)」で覚えよう!

With “Moraimasu”, the particle “NI” marks the Giver. You can also use “KARA” (From). “Tomodachi NI moraimasu” = “Tomodachi KARA moraimasu”. Both are correct!

🚧 Joy’s Mistake (よくある間違い)

Scene: Joy receives a letter from Ken.

Joy: 「ケンさんは 手紙を もらいました。」
(Ken-san wa tegami o moraimashita.)

❌ Wrong Subject!

Why?

これだと「ケンさんが(誰かから)手紙をもらった」という意味になります。
ジョイがもらったなら、主語は「私(ジョイ)」です。
正解は「(私は)ケンさんに 手紙をもらいました」です。

“Ken-san wa moraimashita” means “Ken received it”. If YOU received it, YOU are the subject. Correct: “(Watashi wa) Ken-san ni moraimashita”.
