Noun + の ようです (It seems [Noun])

Core / Conjectural & Observation-based Supposition

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide

📝 Quick Summary

This grammar pattern connects a Noun to ようです using the particle の (no) to express “it seems that…” or “it appears to be…”. It is used when making an observation-based deduction about a status, identity, or day based on physical evidence or circumstance.

Structure: [Noun] + の + ようです
Example 1: あしたは やすみの ようです (It seems tomorrow is a holiday [e.g. seeing locked office doors and empty calendars]).
Example 2: かれは がくせいの ようです (It seems he is a student [e.g. seeing a school uniform and backpack]).

🔗 Connected Grammar:

  • N4-G-069: Verb (plain form) + ようです (It seems [Verb])
  • N4-G-070: い-adjective + ようです (It seems [I-adj])
  • N4-G-071: な-adjective + な ようです (It seems [Na-adj])
  • N4-G-067: Noun + だ そうです (Hearsay: I heard [Noun])
  • N5-G-001: Noun + の Particle Basics

🔍 Layer B: Deepening

💡 Raya’s Hack

The NO Connection Rule Before YOU DESU!
Nouns connect to present affirmative you desu using the particle の (no), following standard noun-noun combination rules:

– Present Affirmative: 休み の ようです (yasumi no you desu – it seems to be a holiday)
– Present Negative: 休み じゃない ようです (yasumi janai you desu – it seems not to be a holiday)
– Past Affirmative: 休み だった ようです (yasumi datta you desu – it seems it was a holiday)

Never keep だ (da) before you desu! Connect present affirmative nouns with の (no)!

🚧 Joy’s Mistake

Scene: Joy observes a young man in school uniform and deduces he is a student.

Joy: 「かれは がくせいだ ようです。」
(Kare wa gakusei da you desu.)

❌ Used “だ” before ようです!

Why?

Joy attached the plain copula da directly before you desu. For Nouns in present affirmative tense before you desu, you MUST replace da with の (no).

Correct: 「かれは がくせいの ようです。」 (It seems he is a student.)

🔥 Layer C: Retrieval Practice Loop
