GrammarBook N5: Duration Expressions

Duration Expressions (時間の長さ)

Supporting / Numbers

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide

📝 Quick Summary (まとめ)

These expressions measure the length of time (Duration). Learn to distinguish between a point in time (3 o’clock) and a duration (3 hours).

Key Units:
Hours: ~時間 (jikan)
Days: ~日 (nichi)
Weeks: ~週間 (shuukan)
Months: ~か月 (kagetsu)
Years: ~年 (nen)

🔗 Connected Grammar (関連文法):

(About/Approximate duration)
(It takes [Time])

🔍 Layer B: Deepening (深掘り)

💡 Raya’s Hack (攻略法)

(One month long)
(Three months long)

Watch out for “Months”! Calendar months are “Gatsu” (Ichigatsu = Jan). But Duration is “Kagetsu” (Ikkagetsu = 1 month long). Don’t forget the small “KA”!

🚧 Joy’s Mistake (よくある間違い)

Scene: Joy says he studied for 3 hours.

Joy: 「3
(San-ji benkyou shimashita.)

❌ Wrong meaning!

Why?

“San-ji” is “3 o’clock”. To say “For 3 hours”, you must add “Kan”. Correct: “San-ji-KAN”.

🔥 Layer C: Practice Loop

Now it’s time to test your learning through the next 10 practice drills!

Level 1: Duration Counters

Q1. 1 Hour (1-ji -> Duration)
(Ichi-jikan)

(Add Kan)

Q2. 1 Week (1-shuu -> Duration)
(Isshuukan)

(Add Kan)

Q3. 1 Month (1-gatsu -> Duration)
(Ikkagetsu)

(Add KA!)

Q4. 1 Year (1-nen -> Duration)
(Ichinen)

(Sometimes “Ichinen-kan”, but “Ichinen” is fine too)

Q5. 2 Days (Use specific counter)
(Futsuka)

(Same as the date. “Ni-nichi” is also understood but “Futsuka” is standard for duration too)

Level 2: Sentences

Q6. I sleep 7 hours every day.

(Mainichi shichijikan nemasu.)

Q7. I worked for 3 years.

(Sannen (kan) hatarakimashita.)

Q8. I will travel for 2 weeks.

(Nishuukan ryokou shimasu.)

Q9. I studied Japanese for 6 months.

(Rokkagetsu Nihongo o benkyou shimashita.)

Q10. Translate: “How many hours do you work?”

(Nanjikan hatarakimasu ka?)
