(Alt Text: Ken being kind [Yasashii] vs. Joy solving a simple puzzle [Kantan])
(Ken being kind [Yasashii] vs. Joy solving a simple puzzle [Kantan])

“This problem is easy.” (Yasashii / Kantan)
“He is kind.” (Yasashii only!)
かんたん (Kantan) means “Simple/Easy.” やさしい (Yasashii) can mean “Easy,” but it also means “Kind.” If you mix them up when talking about people, you might insult them! Let’s learn with Joy and Ken.

🗣 Conversation Scene

Joy is studying Japanese with Ken’s help.

Joy
この問題(もんだい)は かんたん ですね!すぐ終わりました。
ケンさんは教(おし)え方が上手で、やさしい ですね。

(This problem is “simple”! I finished quickly. Ken, you are good at teaching and very “kind”.)
Ken
ありがとうございます。
Joyさんのための教材(きょうざい)ですから、易(やさ)しい 日本語を選(えら)びましたよ。

(Thank you. Since it’s material for you, Joy, I chose “easy” Japanese.)

💡 Explanation

Simplicity vs. Kindness

1. かんたん (Kantan) = Simple / Easy

Kanji: 簡単
Describes a process, method, or structure that is not complicated. It implies it takes little time or effort.

  • かんたんな 料理(りょうり)。
    (Simple cooking / Easy recipe.)
  • かんたんに 説明(せつめい)する。
    (Explain simply/briefly.)

2. やさしい (Yasashii) = Kind OR Easy

This word has two faces (and two Kanji)!

A. 優しい (Kind / Gentle)
Used for personality or atmosphere.

  • 彼は 優しい 人です。
    (He is a kind person.)
  • 肌(はだ)に 優しい。
    (Gentle on the skin.)

B. 易しい (Easy / Simple)
Used for difficulty level. Very similar to “Kantan”.

  • 易しい 日本語。
    (Easy Japanese.)

📊 Comparison Table

Word Key Meaning Use for People?
かんたん (Kantan) Simple, Brief, Uncomplicated NO ❌
(Means “Simple-minded/Easy target”)
やさしい (Yasashii) 1. Kind (優しい) ❤️
2. Easy (易しい) ✅

🚧 Joy’s Mistake

(Joy wants to say Ken is a nice guy)

❌ Wrong: ケンさんは かんたんな 人です。
(Meaning: “Ken is a simple-minded person / He is easy to trick.” This is rude!)

✅ Right: ケンさんは やさしい 人です。
(Meaning: “Ken is a kind person.”)
