The Difference between「〜らしい」と「〜そうだ」の違い|Japanese Grammar (N5–N3)

(Alt Text: Joy quoting news [Sou da] vs. Joy guessing from a scene [Rashii])
(Joy quoting news [Sou da] vs. Joy guessing from a scene [Rashii])

“I heard it will rain.”
雨が 降る そうだ。 (Ame ga furu sou da)
雨が 降る らしい。 (Ame ga furu rashii)
Both mean “I heard…” or “It seems…”, but the reliability of the information is different. One is “Copy & Paste”, the other is “My Guess”. Let’s learn with Joy and Ken!

🗣 Conversation Scene

Joy and Ken are talking about a new restaurant.

Joy
ケンさん、駅前(えきまえ)に新しいお店ができた そうです。
チラシに書いてありました。

(Ken, I heard a new shop opened in front of the station. It was written on a flyer.)
Ken
ああ、あの店ですね。
いつも行列(ぎょうれつ)ができているから、人気(にんき)がある らしい ですよ。

(Ah, that shop. There is always a long line, so “it seems” it is popular / “rumor has it” that it is popular.)

💡 Explanation

Where did the information come from?

Point 1: 〜Sou da (〜そうだ) = Hearsay (Direct)

Source: Clear (News, Specific Person, Report)
You are simply passing on information you heard or read, without adding your own guess. It is “Copy & Paste” information.
Key phrase: “According to…” (〜によると)

  • 天気予報(てんきよほう)によると、雨だ そうです。
(According to the forecast, it will be rain. [Fact transfer])
  • 彼は 来ない そうです。
(I heard [from him/someone] that he isn’t coming.)

Point 2: 〜Rashii (〜らしい) = Conjecture / Rumor

Source: Vague (Situation, Gossip, Appearance)
You are making a guess based on information you gathered. “Based on the fact that everyone has umbrellas, it seems it is raining.” It is often used for rumors.

  • みんな傘(かさ)を持っている。外は 雨 らしい。
(Everyone has umbrellas. It seems/looks like it’s raining outside. [Inference])
  • あの二人は 結婚(けっこん)する らしい。
(Rumor has it they are getting married.)

📊 Comparison Table

Phrase Meaning Certainty
〜そうだ
(Sou da)
I heard that…
(Reporting)
High (I am just reporting what I heard)
〜らしい
(Rashii)
It seems that…
(Guessing / Rumor)
Medium/Low (Based on situation)

🚧 Joy’s Mistake

(Joy reports the Boss’s exact words to Ken)

❌ Wrong: 社長は 3時に 戻(もど)る らしい です。
(Tone: “Rumor has it the boss will be back at 3.” This sounds irresponsible! Did you not check properly?)

✅ Right: 社長は 3時に 戻る そう です。
(Tone: “I heard (from the boss/secretary) that he will be back at 3.” This is reliable info.)

🔥 Practice Quiz

Tap to check the answer!

Q1. According to the news, a typhoon is coming.
(Nyuusu ni yoru to, taifuu ga kuru ______.)
Answer: Sou da (そうだ)
“According to (〜によると)” indicates a clear source, so use “Sou da”.
Q2. Nobody is in the room. It seems the meeting is over.
(Kaigi wa owatta ______.)
Answer: Rashii (らしい)
You are guessing based on the situation (empty room).
Q3. Is “Ame ga furi sou da” the same as “Ame ga furu sou da”?
(Yes or No)
Answer: NO!
Furi-sou (Stem + sou) = Looks like it will rain (Visual).
Furu-sou (Plain + sou) = I heard it will rain (Hearsay).
Keep practicing with JPLT!
