GrammarBook N5: Verb Dictionary form + ために (In order to)

N5-G-069

Verb Dict + ために (In order to)

Peripheral / Purpose

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide (直感理解)

📝 Quick Summary (まとめ)

はっきりした目的(もくてき)があって、「それをするために」何かをするときに使います。「意志(Will)」のある強い表現です。
Use “Tame ni” to express a clear purpose or goal (“In order to…”). It connects volitional actions.

Verb: [Dict Form] + ために (Kau tame ni)
Noun: [Noun] + の + ために (Kazoku no tame ni)

🔗 Connected Grammar (関連文法):

  • N5-G-068: ~ように (So that – State/Ability)
  • N5-G-049: Plain Present Form (Dictionary Form)

🔍 Layer B: Deepening (深掘り)

💡 Raya’s Hack (攻略法)

「ために」と「ように」の決定的な違い!
主語(私)がコントロールできるかどうかで決まります。
* **コントロールできる(意志)** → **ために**
「車を **買う** ために」(買うかどうかは自分で決められる)
* **コントロールできない(状態・能力)** → **ように**
「車が **買える** ように」(能力や状況が変わるのを待つ)
「辞書形」なら「ために」、「可能形」なら「ように」と覚えよう!

If you can control the action directly (will), use “Tame ni”. If it depends on ability or state change (potential), use “Youni”. Dict Form -> Tame ni. Potential Form -> Youni.

🚧 Joy’s Mistake (よくある間違い)

Scene: Joy is studying hard.

Joy: 「上手になるために、練習します。」
(Jouzu ni naru tame ni, renshuu shimasu.)

⚠️ Slightly Unnatural

Why?

「なる (become)」は自然な変化を表す動詞(無意志動詞)なので、「ように」を使う方が自然です。
〇 上手に なる **ように** (So that I become good)
× 上手に なる **ために** (In order to become good – sounds a bit stiff)
「なる」や「わかる」などは「ように」と仲良しです。

“Naru” (become) is a non-volitional verb (it happens naturally). It pairs better with “Youni”. “Jouzu ni naru YOUNI”. Avoid “Tame ni” with verbs like “Naru”, “Wakaru”, “Aru”.
