GrammarBook N5: ~んです (Explanatory Tone)

N5-G-058

~んです (Explanatory Tone)

Supporting / Reasoning

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide (直感理解)

📝 Quick Summary (まとめ)

単なる事実ではなく、「実は~なんです」と事情(じじょう)を説明したいときに使います。理由を言ったり、言い訳をしたりするときに便利です。
Use “N desu” to add an explanatory tone (“The thing is…”, “Actually…”). It conveys that you are giving a reason or explaining the background of a situation.

Structure: [Plain Form] + んです。
Noun/Na-adj: [Noun] + な + んです。

🔗 Connected Grammar (関連文法):

  • N5-G-056: ~からです (Because – Direct Reason)
  • N5-G-057: ~ので (Because – Polite Reason)

🔍 Layer B: Deepening (深掘り)

💡 Raya’s Hack (攻略法)

「んです」=「のです」の話し言葉!
教科書では「~のです」と書いてあることもありますが、「~んです」は会話で使う形です。
* 書くとき:行かないのです。
* 話すとき:行かないんです。
会話では「ん」を使いましょう!

“N desu” is the spoken version of “No desu”. In writing, you might see “No desu”, but in conversation, always shorten it to “N desu”.

🚧 Joy’s Mistake (よくある間違い)

Scene: Joy introduces himself at a party.

Joy: 「はじめまして。私は ジョイなんです。」
(Hajimemashite. Watashi wa Joy na n desu.)

❌ Unnatural!

Why?

ただの事実(名前など)を言うときに「んです」を使うと、「実はジョイなんです(秘密でしたけど)」のような変な意味になります。
自己紹介は普通に「ジョイです」と言いましょう。

Don’t use “N desu” for simple facts. It sounds like you are revealing a secret or implying a hidden meaning. For introductions, just use “Desu”.
