GrammarBook N5: でしょう

  • 01 Feb, 2026

N5-G-055

でしょう (Probably / Right?)

Supporting / Uncertainty

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide (直感理解)

📝 Quick Summary (まとめ)

「たぶん~だと思います(推量)」や「~ですよね?(同意・確認)」という意味で使います。「です」よりも柔らかく、断定を避ける表現です。
Use “Deshou” to express probability (“Probably…”) or to seek confirmation (“Right?”). It softens the statement compared to “Desu”.

Prediction (⤵): 明日は 雨 でしょう。(It will probably rain.)
Confirmation (⤴): これは ケンさんの でしょう?(This is yours, right?)

🔗 Connected Grammar (関連文法):

  • N5-G-053: よ / ね (Casual Agreement “Ne”)
  • N5-G-054: かな (Casual Wondering “Kana”)

🔍 Layer B: Deepening (深掘り)

💡 Raya’s Hack (攻略法)

「だろう」は「でしょう」のカジュアル版!
友達と話すときは「でしょう」の代わりに「だろう」を使います。
* 丁寧:明日は 雨 でしょう。
* カジュアル:明日は 雨 だろう。
男の子っぽい響きがあるので、女の子は単に「でしょ」と言うことも多いよ!

“Darou” is the casual version of “Deshou”. It sounds a bit masculine. Females often just shorten it to “Desho” in casual speech. “Ashita ame desho?”

🚧 Joy’s Mistake (よくある間違い)

Scene: Joy invites Ken to eat.

Joy: 「一緒に 食べる でしょう!」
(Issho ni taberu deshou!)

❌ Sounds like a prediction!

Why?

これだと「あなたは(たぶん)一緒に食べるだろう(予言)」という意味になってしまいます。
誘うときは「~ましょう(Mashou)」です。
正解は「一緒に 食べましょう!」です。

“Deshou” implies a guess or prediction about the future. It does not mean “Let’s”. To invite, use “Mashou”. Correct: “Issho ni tabemashou!”
