GrammarBook N5: ~に~回 (frequency and rates)

  • 18 Jan, 2026

N5-G-040

~に~回 (Frequency expressions)

Supporting / Numbers

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide (直感理解)

📝 Quick Summary (まとめ)

「1週間に1回」や「1年に2回」など、どのくらいの頻度(ひんど)で何かをするかを説明する表現です。「~につき (Per)」という意味で「に」を使います。
Use this pattern to express frequency or rate (“Once a week”, “Twice a year”). The particle “NI” indicates “per”.

Structure: [Period] に [Number] 回 [Verb]。
([Period] ni [Number] kai [Verb].)

🔗 Connected Grammar (関連文法):

  • N5-G-041: Duration Expressions (1-nichi, 1-shuukan)
  • N5-G-042: Basic Counters (1-kai, 2-kai)

🔍 Layer B: Deepening (深掘り)

💡 Raya’s Hack (攻略法)

「に」は割り算の線(/)!
「3回/週」と書くときの「/(スラッシュ)」が「に」だと思えば簡単!
1日 / 3回 = 1日 に 3回。
このリズムを覚えよう!

Think of “NI” as the slash symbol (/) meaning “Per”. “3 times/week” becomes “1-shuukan NI 3-kai”. It creates the rate!

🚧 Joy’s Mistake (よくある間違い)

Scene: Joy says he watches movies 3 times a month.

Joy: 「1か月 の 3回 映画を見ます。」
(Ikkagetsu NO sankai eiga o mimasu.)

❌ Wrong Particle!

Why?

「の (NO)」は名詞をつなぐだけです。割合(Rate)を表すときは必ず「に (NI)」を使います。
正解は「1か月 に 3回」です。

“NO” just connects nouns. To express a rate or frequency per period, you must use “NI”. Correct: “Ikkagetsu NI sankai”.
