GrammarBook N5: ~て (Connecting Sentences)

~て (Sequence of Actions)

Supporting / Te-form

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide (直感理解)

📝 Quick Summary (まとめ)

複数の動作(どうさ)を順番(じゅんばん)に言うときに使います。「~して、~して、~します」のように文をつなぐ「接着剤(せっちゃくざい)」の役割をします。
The “Te-form” acts as a conjunction (like “and”) to connect multiple actions in a sequence. “I do A, then B, then C.”

Structure: [Action 1 Te-form], [Action 2 Te-form], [Final Action].

🔗 Connected Grammar (関連文法):

  • N5-G-015: Verb Groups (Rules for Te-form)
  • N5-G-047: ~てから (After doing…)

🔍 Layer B: Deepening (深掘り)

💡 Raya’s Hack (攻略法)

「時(とき)を決めるのは、最後(さいご)の動詞!」
「て形」には過去(かこ)も未来(みらい)もありません。時間の情報は、一番最後の動詞が持っています。
例:「起きて、食べて、行きました」= 全部「過去」の話になるよ!

The “Te-form” is timeless. The tense of the WHOLE sentence is decided by the FINAL verb. If the last verb is Past Tense, all previous “Te” actions are also Past.

🚧 Joy’s Mistake (よくある間違い)

Scene: Joy listing his morning routine.

Joy: 「起きますて、食べます。」
(Okimasu te, tabemasu.)

❌ Wrong!

Why?

「ます」に「て」をつけることはできません!
動詞のグループルールに従って、正しい「て形」を作りましょう。
正解は「起きて (Okite)、食べます」です。

You cannot add “te” to “masu”. You must use the proper conjugation rules. Correct: “Okite, tabemasu”.

🔥 Layer C: Practice Loop

Now it’s time to test your learning through the next 10 practice drills!

Level 1: Connect Two Actions

Q1. Okimasu (Wake up) + Tabemasu (Eat)
答え: 起きて、食べます (Okite, tabemasu)

(Wake up and eat)

Q2. Iku (Go) + Miru (See)
答え: 行って、見ます (Itte, mimasu)

(Go and see)

Q3. Kau (Buy) + Taberu (Eat)
答え: 買って、食べます (Katte, tabemasu)

(Buy and eat)

Q4. Kiku (Listen) + Kaku (Write)
答え: 聞いて、書きます (Kiite, kakimasu)

(Listen and write)

Q5. Kaeru (Return) + Neru (Sleep)
答え: 帰って、寝ます (Kaette, nemasu)

(Return home and sleep)

Level 2: Advanced (Past Tense Chain)

Q6. Translate: “Yesterday, I went to department store and bought a bag.”
答え: 昨日 デパートへ 行って、かばんを 買いました。

(Kinou depaato e itte, kaban o kaimashita.)

Q7. Translate: “I drank coffee and read a book.”
答え: コーヒーを 飲んで、本を 読みました。

(Koohii o nonde, hon o yomimashita.)

Q8. Translate: “I met a friend and watched a movie.”
答え: 友達に 会って、映画を 見ました。

(Tomodachi ni atte, eiga o mimashita.)

Q9. Translate: “I washed my hands and ate dinner.”
答え: 手(て)を 洗(あら)って、晩(ばん)ご飯を 食べました。

(Te o aratte, bangohan o tabemashita.)

Q10. True or False: “Ittemashita” is a correct way to say “I went”.
答え: False

(You only conjugate the end of the sentence. “Itte, mimashita” is correct. “Ittemashita” is wrong conjugation.)
