GrammarBook N5: ~てもいいです

N5-G-024

~てもいいです (Permission)

Supporting / Te-form

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide (直感理解)

📝 Quick Summary (まとめ)

「許可(きょか)」を求めたり、与(あた)えたりする表現です。「~しても大丈夫(だいじょうぶ)ですか?」と聞くときに使います。
Use this pattern to ask for permission (“May I…?”) or to give permission (“You may…”). It literally means “Even if I do [Action], is it good?”

Structure: [Verb Te-form] + も いいですか (mo ii desu ka).

🔗 Connected Grammar (関連文法):

  • N5-G-022: ~てください (Request)
  • N5-G-025: ~てはいけません (Prohibition)

🔍 Layer B: Deepening (深掘り)

💡 Raya’s Hack (攻略法)

「も (MO)」を忘れないで!
「食べていいですか?」でも通じるけど、正しい日本語は「食べてもいいですか?」だよ。
「MO」は「Even if(もし~しても)」という大事な接着剤(せっちゃくざい)なんだ。

Don’t forget the “MO”! It acts as the logic bridge meaning “Even if”. “Even if I do this, is it good?” -> “May I do this?”.

🚧 Joy’s Mistake (よくある間違い)

Scene: Joy asks to take a photo.

Joy: 「写真(しゃしん)を 撮る もいいですか?」
(Shashin o toru mo ii desu ka?)

❌ Wrong!

Why?

「撮る (Toru)」は辞書形(じしょけい)です。「も」の前は必ず「て形 (Te-form)」にします。
正解は「撮って もいいですか (Totte mo ii desu ka)」です。

You cannot use the Dictionary Form before “mo”. You must change the verb to Te-form first. Correct: “Totte mo ii desu ka?”.
