GrammarBook N5: い-adjectives

い-Adjectives (Present & Negative)

Supporting / Adjectives

👀 Layer A: Visual Guide (直感理解)

📝 Quick Summary (まとめ)

「い」で終わる形容詞(けいようし)です。物(もの)の状態(じょうたい)や性質(せいしつ)を説明します。
否定形(ひていけい)を作るときは、最後の「い」を取って、「くない」をつけます。
i-Adjectives always end in the Hiragana “i”. To make them negative, you must DROP the “i” and add “kunai”.

Positive: おいしい です (Oishii desu)
Negative: おいしくない です (Oishi-kunai desu)

🔗 Connected Grammar (関連文法):

  • N5-G-001: AはBです (Basic Sentence)
  • N5-G-021: な-Adjectives (Comparison)

🔍 Layer B: Deepening (深掘り)

💡 Raya’s Hack (攻略法)

「い形容詞」のしっぽは、トカゲのしっぽ!
否定(ひてい)にする時は、ハサミで「い」をチョキンと切って、「くない」を貼り付けよう!
× おいしいじゃない
〇 おいし(カット)+ くない = おいしくない!

Think of the final “i” as a lizard’s tail. For negative sentences, cut off the “i” with scissors and paste “kunai” instead! Never say “Oishii janai”.

🚧 Joy’s Mistake (よくある間違い)

Scene: Joy says the sushi is not expensive.

Joy: 「この寿司は 高い ではありません。」
(Kono sushi wa takai dewa arimasen.)

❌ Wrong!

Why?

「ではありません」は名詞(めいし)に使います。い形容詞には使えません!
正解は「高くない です」です。

“Dewa arimasen” is for Nouns. You cannot use it for i-adjectives. You must use the “kunai” form. Correct: “Taka-kunai desu”.

🔥 Layer C: Practice Loop

Now it’s time to test your learning through the next 10 practice drills!
