Japanese demonstratives change depending on the distance between you and the object.
- これ (Kore) = This
[わたし] の ちかくに ある ものです。(Near Me) - それ (Sore) = That
[あなた] の ちかくに ある ものです。(Near You) - あれ (Are) = That over there
[ふたり] から とおい ところにある ものです。(Far from both)

- ⚡ My hand? → これ (Kore)

- ⚡ No one’s hand? → あれ (Are)
🚧 Joy’s Mistake (よくある間違い)
Scene: Joy holding Ken’s wallet.
Joy: 「ケンさん、それは ケンさんのですか？」
❌ Wrong!
Why is it wrong?
たとえケンさんの財布でも、今「Joyの手」にあるなら、それは「これ (Kore)」です。所有者ではなく「場所」で決まります。
Even if it is Ken’s wallet, if it is in “Joy’s hand” now, it is “Kore”. It depends on the Location, not the owner.

Level 1: 基礎ドリル (Basic)

答え: これ (Kore)
自分の手にあるものは「これ」。(In my hand = Kore)

答え: それ (Sore)
相手の手にあるものは「それ」。(In your hand = Sore)
Q3. (Far from both) ______ wa ginkou desu.
答え: あれ (Are)
二人から遠いものは「あれ」。(Far from us = Are)
Q4. True or False: “Sore” is used for things near the speaker.
答え: False (間違い)
“Sore” is for things near the LISTENER (You). Speaker uses “Kore”.
Q5. Question: “Which one?” = ______ desu ka?
答え: どれ (Dore)
質問する時は「どれ (Do-re)」を使います。

電話では「これ」ではなく、丁寧な「こちら」を使います。

人を指差すのは失礼です。「こちらの方」と言いましょう。

メニューを指差す時は、自分の指の近くなので「これ」です。
