~ほど~ない (Not as… as…)
Peripheral / Comparison
👀 Layer A: Visual Guide (直感理解)
📝 Quick Summary (まとめ)
「AはBより~だ」の逆(ぎゃく)のパターンです。「AはBのレベルまでは届(とど)かない」という意味で、「AはBほど~ない」と言います。
Use this pattern to say “A is not as [Adjective] as B”. It denies that A reaches the extent/level of B. The sentence must always end in the negative form.
Structure: A は B ほど [Negative Form] です。
(A wa B hodo …nai desu.)
🔍 Layer B: Deepening (深掘り)
💡 Raya’s Hack (攻略法)
「ほど」の後ろは必ず「ない」!
「東京は 北海道ほど 寒いです」とは言いません。
「ほど」は「~のレベルまで」という意味なので、比較(ひかく)で使うときは「そこまで達(たっ)していない(Not)」という否定形(ひていけい)とセットになります。
“Hodo” must be followed by “Nai” (Negative) in comparisons! “Hodo” sets a high bar (extent), and the negative verb says “it doesn’t reach that bar”. Always check for the negative ending!
🚧 Joy’s Mistake (よくある間違い)
Scene: Joy says today isn’t as hot as yesterday.
Joy: 「今日は 昨日ほど 暑いです。」
(Kyou wa kinou hodo atsui desu.)
❌ Wrong!
Why?
「暑いです」は肯定(こうてい)です。「ほど」を使うなら、必ず否定「暑くないです」にしなければなりません。
正解は「今日は 昨日ほど 暑くない です」です。
You used the positive “atsui”. With “hodo”, you must use the negative “atsukunai” to say “not as hot as”. Correct: “Kyou wa kinou hodo atsukunai desu”.
