Japanese Learning TIPS

The Difference Between Particle 「と」 (to) vs 「や」 (ya)|Japanese Grammar (N5–N3)

  • 05 Dec, 2025
  • Com 0
(Alt Text: Joy showing all items [To] vs. Joy showing examples with more in bag [Ya])
( Joy showing all items [To] vs. Joy showing examples with more in bag [Ya])

“I bought an apple and a banana.”
Did you buy anything else? In Japanese, the particle you use tells the listener if that is everything or just examples. We use と (To) and や (Ya). Let’s learn the difference!

🗣 Conversation Scene

Joy went shopping and is showing Ken what she bought.

Joy
ケンさん、見てください。
スーパーで りんご と バナナ を買いました。

(Ken, look. I bought apples “and” bananas at the supermarket.)
Ken
それだけですか?袋(ふくろ)の中に、まだブドウやオレンジがありますよ?
そのときは りんご や バナナ を使(つか)います。

(Is that all? There are still grapes and oranges in the bag. In that case, use “Ringo YA Banana”.)

💡 Explanation

Both mean “And”, but the scope is different.

Point 1: To (と) = Complete List

Use To when you list ALL the items. “A and B (and that is everything).”

  • 教室(きょうしつ)に 先生(せんせい)と 学生(がくせい)が います。
(There are a teacher and a student in the room. [Nobody else])
  • 日曜日(にちようび)と 月曜日(げつようび)が 休(やす)みです。
(Sunday and Monday are holidays. [Only these two days])

Point 2: Ya (や) = Representative List (Examples)

Use Ya when you list EXAMPLES. “A and B (and others like C and D).” It implies there is more.

  • 箱(はこ)の中に 本(ほん)や ペンが あります。
(There are books and pens [and other things like erasers] in the box.)
  • 私(わたし)は 寿司(すし)や 天ぷら(てんぷら)が 好(す)きです。
(I like sushi and tempura [and other Japanese foods].)
🚀 Tip: “Ya” is often used with など (nado), which means “etc.”
Example: 本や ペン など (Books, pens, etc.)

📊 Comparison Table

Particle Meaning Nuance
A と B A and B Complete set. Nothing else.
A や B A and B (etc.) Incomplete set. There are others.

🚧 Joy’s Mistake

(Asking about family members)

❌ Wrong: 家族(かぞく)は 父(ちち)や 母(はは)が います。
(Unless you have many other secret family members, use “To”!)

✅ Right: 家族(かぞく)は 父(ちち)と 母(はは)と 私(わたし)です。
(List all members clearly.)

🔥 Practice Quiz

Tap to check the answer!

Q1. In my bag, I have a wallet, keys, a phone, candy… (Listing examples)
(Kaban no naka ni, saifu ______ kagi ga arimasu.)
Answer: ya (や)
Because there are other things (phone, candy) not mentioned.
Q2. I only ate bread and eggs for breakfast.
(Asagohan wa pan ______ tamago o tabemashita.)
Answer: to (と)
You are listing everything you ate.
Q3. I like Kyoto, Nara, etc.
(Kyouto ______ Nara nado ga suki desu.)
Answer: ya (や)
“Nado” (etc.) is a big hint to use “Ya”.
Keep practicing with JPLT!
